Avoid a Panic Attack by Paying Attention to the Symptoms of Anxiety

In my mid twenties, I had my first and only panic attack. Looking back on it, I was ignoring the underlying symptoms of anxiety and this I feel was the major source for the panic attack. Anxiety always feels to me like it is a low level of fear and I have learned to pay attention to anxiety symptoms before it leads to another panic attack. In a way anxiety symptoms and panic attacks are the last resort way that your heart and soul tries to warn you about an important aspect or area of your life.

Symptoms of Anxiety that Can Lead to a Panic Attack

Here is a list of some of the major symptoms of anxiety. The more of these factors that you have in your life the more probable it is that you will experience panic attack.

Symptoms of Anxiety 1: Stress, Worry and Financial Stress

Whenever you are experiencing stress whether at work or in the home, this is a major contributing source to anxiety. Worry and anxiety about money are huge sources of stress especially in this period of financial instability.

Symptoms of Anxiety 2: High Blood Pressure

Often when we are feeling anxious, our blood pressure may skyrocket. A lot of places like Walmart and CVS in the United States have blood pressure measuring equipment that you can use to see how your blood pressure is doing.

Symptoms of Anxiety 3: Insomnia, Sleeping Problems and Disorders

When you are feeling anxious often you are not getting the amount of rest that you need to thrive. Try to go to bed earlier. Take a relaxing bath an hour before bed and do not watch TV especially the news right before you go to sleep.

Symptoms of Anxiety 4: Overeating or Drinking

Often when we are emotionally unsettled, we may eat more carbohydrates and sugary sweets than we normally do and often people smoke or drink more alcohol than normal for them. Some people may even indulge in shopping therapy. A lot of addictive behavior is tied to low level anxiety and if you feel drawn to doing things that you normally do not do often it means that you are emotionally unsettled or anxious.

Symptoms of Anxiety 5: Look Carefully at What is Going On in Your Life

The panic attack I had was because I was about to make a huge life change that wasn?t aligned with my highest good. I had made a mental decision or choice that was not aligned with who I was and the panic attack was a warning sign from my soul that I needed to take a hard look at that area of my life and make changes.

Techniques to Help Alleviate the Symptoms of Anxiety that lead to Panic Attacks

Here are some things you can do to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and hopefully preven panic attacks. A lot of these are common sense.

Preventing a Panic Attack Technique 1: Eat a Balanced Diet

Try to eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the day. Cut back on sugar, fructose corn syrup, soft drinks, coffee and tea. Cut back on drinking and smoking cigarettes.

Preventing a Panic Attack Technique 2:  Get a Good Night?s Sleep

Make sure you get at least 7 to 9 hours of good quality sleep each night.

Preventing a Panic Attack Technique 3: Learn How to Meditate and Do It

Meditation is a great way to slow your mind. It not only helps you heal anxiety but it also helps heal the effects of sleep deprivation.

Preventing a Panic Attack Technique 4: Be True to Yourself

Often we become anxious because we are doing something that is not aligned with our heart and soul. Try to be as true to yourself as you can be and you will often experience less anxiety.

Preventing a Panic Attack Technique 5: Take a Hard Look at Your Life and Finances

Usually there is a reason for why you feel more anxious. When you realize that you are feeling anxious stop what you are doing and try to figure out why it is happening. A lot of anxiety in many people?s lives is because they spend more money than they make. It is very important that you live within your means and try to save up a six month reserve fund to tide you over when money challenges pop up.

Preventing a Panic Attack Technique 6: Ask for Help

It is OK to seek help when you are feeling anxious or are experiencing panic attacks. Almost everyone experiences this at least once in a lifetime. If you feel that this is negatively impacting your quality of life, go see a professional.

Panic Attack and Symptoms of Anxiety Medications

I do feel that anxiety medications are overprescribed in the US. They treat the symptoms of anxiety rather than addressing the cause of anxiety and panic attacks. I feel that anxiety medications can help people in the short run to give you time to figure out why you are feeling anxious so you can address the cause but I do not feel that they are a good long term solution.
